    Echizen City living with tradition

Echizen City has been a popular center of politics, economics, and culture in the Hokuriku Region and is the place where Echizen’s provincial government headquarters was first established long ago. In the Heian period, Murasaki Shikibu spent her adolescence in this place. Echizen City is a historical and cultural area with Okata Shrine where Emperor Keitai is enshrined, and Hanagatami Park, which is famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. The city has been vigorously developing as a Monozukuri City with a wide variety of traditional industries, such as EchiZen Uchihamono, Echizenwashi, and Echizen Sashimono, as well as modern, cutting-edge technology industries.

    Traditional craft, Echizen Uchihamono
Echizen Uchihamono was started by Kuniyasu Chiyozuru, a swordsmith in Kyoto, who made agricultural blades and hooks, while making swords in old Takefu City (the current Echizen City) approx. 700 years ago during the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Kuniyasu sculptured a shrine dog statue and sunk it in a well every time he made a sword. This behavior conveyed his hope as an artisan that his swords would only serve as symbols of the samurai, not used as a tool to kill people. His spirit has been inherited by the present Echizen Uchihamono artisans in the production of the best tools, not weapons. Echizen Uchihamono is a local industry that produces the best-quality uchihamono based on the traditional historical technique of Hizukuri Tanzo and inherited by the current era.

    “iiza” Iiza logo mark

Iiza, the Echizen brand consortium uses the shrine dog of Kuniyasu Chiyozuru as its logo to represent the spirit of Echizen Uchihamono. The consortium uses Hinotori to represent the Hizukuri Tanzo inherited by the artisans. This mark symbolizes the wishes of people involved in Echizen Uchihamono to follow the history of Echizen Uchihamono. Inherited and developing hammering technique Echizen Uchihamono began with the making of swords, and the traditional Hizukuri Tanzo technique was combined with new techniques to become the current technique. Iiza kitchen knives are special; the design considers the best edge and ease of use provided by artisanship so that users can experience the pleasure of holding and using the tool.
